UniFi Protect or Reolink: which CCTV system suits your home?

The short answer

Choose Reolink when you want straightforward, professionally installed CCTV with local recording and a clear package starting point. Consider UniFi Protect when you want cameras and your home network planned within one ecosystem, or already own suitable UniFi equipment.

Both need camera positions, cabling, recording and handover planned around the property. The right choice depends on what you want the finished system to do.

When Reolink is a good fit

Reolink is a practical choice for a homeowner who wants a defined CCTV starting point. Our featured wired package combines four cameras, an eight-channel recorder and local storage. The survey confirms coverage, access and any additional work before the installation is quoted.

The useful question is whether the camera views and recording meet your needs. A well-positioned camera, tidy installation and tested recorder matter more than choosing a brand on reputation alone.

Our less-cabling Reolink option solves a different problem. Solar-assisted battery cameras may suit selected sheds, gates or detached areas with suitable sunlight and Wi-Fi. They record detected events rather than normal continuous video. Start with the wireless CCTV fit check if cabling is the main obstacle.

When UniFi Protect is worth considering

UniFi Protect is a strong option if you already use UniFi networking, want to upgrade the network alongside the cameras, or value a system with a planned expansion path.

We select the camera models, recording console, switching and storage together. If you also want a video doorbell, intercom or home Wi-Fi upgrade, we can assess those needs as part of the same survey. Each part is included or excluded explicitly in the quote.

UniFi is not automatically the best fit for every budget. Extra cameras, switching, storage and cable work affect the final cost. How the apps work

UniFi Network and UniFi Protect are separate applications within the UniFi ecosystem. Protect handles the camera and recording functions; Network manages compatible networking equipment. Intercom and access functions depend on the products selected.

At handover, we set up and demonstrate the apps needed for your system. You should know how to find a recording and use the everyday functions included in your design, without needing to become a network engineer.

Where the video is recorded

Our wired Reolink systems record to a recorder at the property. Our Protect designs also use recording hardware at the property. Local recording and remote viewing are separate functions: the app needs a suitable connection to reach the system when you are away.

Local recording does not mean that every connected feature is entirely offline. Remote access, notification images and optional off-site services have their own data handling. If you want local-only viewing or have particular privacy requirements, discuss them at the survey. Ubiquiti explains its approach in How UniFi Protect protects your data.

Neither of these CCTV offers is a professional monitoring or response service.

Can you use what is already installed?

Possibly. Existing cabling, switching and recording equipment need checking for condition, compatibility and capacity. Tell us which models you have and what you want to improve. A site visit helps establish what is worth retaining.

Do not assume that a camera from one system will provide all of its features in another recorder or app. Compatibility is a design check, not a reason to replace everything automatically.

What should the quote explain?

• The camera positions and views you need.
• The proposed equipment and what can be retained.
• Continuous or event recording, storage and retention assumptions.
• Included cabling, mounting and configuration.
• Additional access, network or building work, where relevant.
• Owner access, app handover and support arrangements.
